Great Britain. Medal for the Defense of Kelat-i-Ghilzie, 1842. Havildar Fazil Raz 43rd Bl. N.I. Engraved. After the massacre of General Elphinstone's army during the 1842 retreat from Kabul, the only British forces left in Afghanistan were at Jalalabad and Kelat-i-Ghilzie. Situated between Kabul and Qandahar, the fort of Kelat-i-Ghilzie withstood siege for four months from February to May 1842 until relieved by Maj. Gen. Nott on the 26th of May. The medal, authorized by the East India Company, was awarded to the garrison commanded by Capt. John Halkett Craigie consisting of 55 European and 877 Indian troops. On ribbon. Rare. Toned.
