England. William and Mary (1688-1694). Battle of La Hogue, 1692. Dutch Medal. White Metal. Unsigned. Louis XIV head right, rev. Louis XVI, holding a broken trident, his crown falling from his head, standing left upon a snail in the sea; EXTOLERAT. CORNUA. SED.PERIT. SALO. ("He raised his horns but perished in the sea"). Of the reverse, Medallic Illustrations notes "When the snail is in full vigour, and not alarmed by danger, it boldly puts forth its horns; but when touched by salt water it perishes. The French fleet sailed with every appearance of strength and power, but at La Hogue it perished in the salt sea". British Naval Medals - Mountbatten 106; MI ii 66/270 (silver); V.
