Federico da Montefeltro (1422-1482), Lord of (1444) and Duke (1474) of Urbino. Medal, Urbino 1468. Bonze, 93mm. ALTER.ADEST.CESAR SCIPIOROMAN ETALTER SEV.PACEM.POPVLIS.SEV.FERA.BELLA.DEDIT, Bust left of one of the most successful condottiere of the Italian Renaissance wearing mortier, cuirass and mantle, adorning the cuirass is a large relief of a Lapith pulling down a centaur, two victories holding a wreath above, mask below; plain border, rev. MARS.FERVS.ET.SVMHVM.TANGENS.CV THEREA.TONANTEM.DANT.TIBI.REGNA.PARES.ET.TVA.FATA.MOVENT, An eagle, wings spread, ¾ left, standing on a torse; its wings support a plate on which rests a cuirass, shield and sword, a glove, and a brush with an olive branch; above are the stars between Mars and Jupiter, each with its own sign; across: INVICTVS.FEDERICVS.C.VBINI. / ANNO.D.M CCCCLXVIII, Clemente signs below: OPVS CLEME-NTIS VBINATIS; pearl border. This is the only known work by the artist and was made to commemorate Federico's victories leading Milanese, Neapolitan and Bolognese forces over the Venetians under Bartolomeo Colleoni, notably Federico's success in the July 1467 Battle of Molinella.
