John VII Paleologus (1370-1408), Byzantine Emperor (April 14-Sept. 17, 1390. Medal. Bronze, 102mm. The first medal made in 1438 to commemorate the Council of Ferrara-Florence. Bust right with trim beard and moustache, wearing a hat with a tall crown and large upturned brim, vest and cloak with falling collar, Greek legend around, rev. The emperor on horseback right, a bow and quiver at his side, raising his hands in prayer as he passes a wayside cross, behind him a mounted page, rocky outcrop in background, signed above. Armand I, 7, 20; Hill 19; Pollard 1 = Kress 1; Bargello 2. Some filemarks on edges. Olive-green patina. An Extremely Fine old cast.
