Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta (1417-1468), Lord of Rimini, Fano and Senigallia 1432. Foundation Medal for the Church of San Francesco, Rimini ca. 1450. Bronze, 40mm. SIGISMONDVS PANDVLFVS.MALATESTA.PAN.F, Laureate bust left wearing tunic, rev. PRAECL.ARIMINI.TEMPLVM.AN.GRATIAE.V.F. .M.CCC.L., Church dome and façade. The reverse depicts the never to be completed designs by Alberti for the restoration of the church as Tempio Malatestiano, which Malatesta envisioned as a kind of personal mausoleum for himself and his lover, later wife, Isotta degli Atti. Armand I, 21, 17; Bargello I, 47a; Hill Corpus 183; Kress 66, Pollard NGA 37. Six examples of this medal arranged in the form of a cross (with a seventh, Hill 182) were found on the remains of Malatesta when his tomb was opened in 1756. Some old scratches in the fields.
