"MAESTRO DELLE NUBI A SPIGA" (15th-16th Century)
The Deposition: Descent from the Cross. Rectangular plaquette, possibly Mantua, ca. early 1500s. Silver, 49 x 66mm. The dead body of Christ being taken down from the cross by two men on ladders, six figures standing below, two seated, spiky clouds in the sky. Derived from prints by Andrea Mantegna dating to ca. 1465/70. The composition is a pendant to another plaquette of the Deposition, both of which are derived from prints by Mantegna dating to around 1465/70. An interesting specimen fusing the two plaquettes together is in the collection of the Museo Palazzo Madama in Turin. Cf. Morton & Eden 105, November 28, 2019, lot 312. Very Fine and likely a later cast. Kinsky, by private treaty (Vienna), January 27, 2015.
