GIOVANNI DI FONDULINO FONDULI - formerly the Master IO.F.F. (ca. 1465-1475)
"Sacrifice of Iphigenia". Round plaquette. Silver or silvered, 51mm. At the center, a naked female figure, her tresses loose, stands facing, her head turned right, her arm raised; before her an armed man presses her with his shield and raises his sword as if to strike. An attendant stands behind with a trophy of arms; at her left, watching and gesticulating is a young, armed warrior and an older, draped man; a piece of armor on the ground, clouds in the sky. For a bronze example of this piece, see "An Important Collection of Renaissance Medals and Plaquettes," Spink, January 24, 2008, lot 59; Bange 657; Bode 956; Kress 104; Moliner 135; Ricci ii p.237, 343; Sambon 117, pl. VII. Moliner identifies the subject here as the Sacrifice of Iphigenia, but this seems doubtful. The woman is not clothed in wedding attire, there is no altar or hind and the armor and attendant with trophy does not fit. Bange suggest the subject is Theseus overcoming Antiope. A Very fine old cast.
