FLORENTINE SCHOOL - FOLLOWER OF NICCOLÒ SPINELLI called NICCOLÒ FIORENTINO (1480-1510)
Giovanni Gaddi, Prior of Florence (died 1485). Medal. Bronze, 90mm. IOANNES DE GHADDIS incised, cuirassed bust left, partial signature under the deep truncation, the only legible portion being OPVS, rev. Hooded falcon standing left on a laurel branch, looking up at a scroll with the incised legend: TANT QVE IE VIVRAI. Hill 1084c - this piece; Armand I, 96, 1. The partial inscription below the truncation is not noted in any of the published sources. Although this medal is typically ascribed to a follower of Niccolò Fiorentino, Friedlander suggests Benedetto da Maiano as the maker and proposes a later date of 1485-1490, making this a posthumous portrait. Rich deep brown patina. An Extremely Fine old cast, finely chased and in high relief. Ex Lawrence 'Larry' Stack, Morton & Eden Sale 41, December 9, 2009, lot 116. Ex Bank Leu Sale 74, October 19, 1998, lot 733. Ex Baron Charles Alexander de Cosson, Sotheby's (London), March 19, 1951, lot 175 (illustrated).
