GIANPIETRO CRIVELLI (1463-1552)
Self Portrait. Medal, Rome c. 1520s-1530s. Bronze, 50.5mm. Bust right wearing a gown; bead and reel border, rev. IOAN / PIET / RO CR / IVELLO, crossed branches below, all within a wreathed oval frame with volutes around and a mask below.
A Milanese jeweler and goldsmith, Crivelli moved to Rome in 1504, becoming a member of the Roman guild and numbering Caradosso, Lorenzo Lotto and Benvenuto Cellini among his friends and associates. Around 1538-1539, he had a stately home built, notable for its stucco decorated façade which has given the Palazzo Crivelli its monicker today of Casa dei Pupazzi (House of Puppets). Attwood 923.
