Iran. Safavid. `Abbas I (AH 995-1038/ 1588-1629 AD. Safavid occupation of Baghdad. AR Abbasi, Baghdad AH 1037 (1628 AD). 7.54 gms. Very Rare. In December 1534, Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent took Baghdad from the Safavids. In January 1624, the Persians took the city back at the beginning of the Ottoman-Safavid War of 1623-1639. They successfully held Bagdad against campaigns by Ahmet Pasha and Hüsrev Pasha, but lost it to Murad IV in December 1638.. Last digit of date weak but certain. Flat area of strike. Fine.
