Montenegro. Order for the Right, Honor and Freedom of Montenegro 1919. Badge. Gilt Bronze and enamels. 35mm. Gilt Arms - double headed eagle with lion passant left on red enamel on breast, crossed swords behind, wreath around in blue, white and red enamels - the National colors, white enamel ribbon on top with legend in Cyrillic. Created January 3, 1919 by King Nicholas I while in exile in France to reward those seeking to restore the independence and monarchy of Montenegro at the end of World War I and especially for those who took part in the January 1919 Christmas Uprising. The resistance to the union of Yugoslavia was finally crushed in the 1922-1923 campaign, although sporadic guerrilla attacks continued through the 1920's. The display of the Montenegrin Arms became a criminal offense in Yugoslavia. And it was not until 1993 that those Arms were reinstated. Very rare. On original ribbon. Extremely Fine.
