Peru. Alianza Americana and Battle of Callao Medal, 1866. Bronze, 77mm. By Harry Emanuel. Four Amazons representing Argentina, Peru, Ecuador and Chile swear mutual allegiance against Spain, HARRY EMANUEL / LONDON incuse below, rev. Aerial view of the Spanish bombardment of Callao, two classically armored women representing Peru and Chile, holding shields and swords, hover above. The alliance was formed to thwart Spain's ambition to regain Peru. On May 2, 1866 the Spanish fleet bombarded the city of Callao and later withdrew. Spain viewed this as a victory as their fleet had silenced all of the coastal emplacements. Conversely, Peru, viewed it as a victory, claiming it had stopped the Spanish forces from re-colonizing South America. Spain officially recognized Peru's independence in 1879. Scarce. Good Very Fine.
