Logan, John Alexander (1826-1886). US soldier and political leader, Union General in the Civil War, founder of the G.A.R., Senator from Illinois, Representative-Illinois, Republican vice-presidential candidate in the 1884 Elections, running with James G. Blaine (see lot 979 above). Autograph Letter Signed "John A Logan". One page, 5 ½ x 8 7/8", Chicago, Aug. 30, no year (but likely 1884). Addressing the Hon. C. Bigger of Dallas Texas, Logan writes: "Dear Friend, Your letter of 27 received. I thank you for your kindly offer, and would suggest that you write the National Committee. I think they would have some work for you in Ohio or some of those states, if you are willing.". Period ink notation regarding contents on verso addressed to "Mr. Jones: (Benjamin Franklin Jones, Secretary Republican National Committee, 1884-1888) [See Lot 993 below]. Fine.
