With a bribe of 6,000 talents into the coffers of Julius Caesar and Pompey, Ptolemy XII, nicknamed "Auletes" (the flute player), forged a formal alliance in 59 BC with Rome. His name was inscribed onto the list of friends and allies of the people of Rome. And to Rome he fled the next year, fleeing an Alexandrian mob angered over his inaction after Rome's conquest of Cyprus.
