German States. East Friesland. Georg Christian (1660-1665). 8 Ducats, nd (1662). Long-haired, cuirassed bust right; (heart over three axes) GEORG. CHRIST. D. G. PR. F. O. D. I. E. S. ET. W (Georg Christian by the Grace of God Prince of Ostfriesland, Lord of Esens, Stedesdorf and Wittmund), rev. Tri-helmeted complex Arms; D. A. PACEM. DOMINE. IN. DIEBVS. NO: Fr.890. Georg Christian of the ruling Cirksena family succeeded his brother Enno Louis in 1660 as ruler. Earlier, while studying at the University of Tübingen, he had met his future wife Christine Charlotte, daughter of Duke Eberhard III of Württemberg. But protocol dictated that to marry a Princess of Württemberg, Georg Christian needed to hold the hereditary title of Imperial Prince. He finally received the title on April 18, 1662. Georg Christian and Christine Charlotte were wedded less than a month later, on May 10, in Stuttgart. This coin, which was struck from Taler dies, was likely a presentation piece for the ceremonies connected to the formal recognition of Georg Christian as an Imperial Prince, or for his marriage to Christine Charlotte. Extremely rare. PCGS AU 53.
