Roman Imperial. Western Empire. Libius Severus (461-465). Issued under Ricimer. AE, 10mm. Rome. Crude diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. Ricimer monogram. RIC 2716. Rare. For three months after the death of Majorian, the Western throne sat vacant. Finally, Ricimer installed a Lucanian, Libius Severus as puppet emperor. Severus' reign was beset by threats from the Alans and the Vandals under Gaiseric. Libius Severus died Nov.14, 465 supposedly from natural causes -- a miracle in the turbulent final three decades of the Western Empire. It is more likely though, that, he was poisoned, as Cassiodorus alludes, by Ricimer. Near Very Fine.
