Saudi Arabia. `Abd al-`Aziz b. Sa`ud (AH 1344-1373/1926-1953 AD). 4 Pounds, nd (1945-6). Philadelphia mint. American eagle; U.S. MINT PHILADELPHIA-U.S.A., rev. Three-line gold weight legend in lined rectangle. KM 34. In the 1940's, the Arabian-American Oil Company (Aramco), paid `Abd al-`Aziz's government $3 million a year in oil revenues. Its contract required payment be made in gold. Gold 4 Pounds and Pounds (Sovereigns) were produced at the Philadelphia mint for this purpose. These pieces saw limited circulation in Saudi Arabia, some Aramco workers even used them as poker chips. Most were melted down into bullion and sold as gold bars in Macao. PCGS AU 55.
