Great Britain. General Officer's Scimitar. By R. Johnston, 68 St. James St., London (a fine sword cutler, Richard Johnston operated at this address from 1798-1840). Curved 29" scimitar blade, 1 1/8" wide; one-third of the blade is blued with gold over etched designs of a dragon, bow, quiver and arrows, and floral sprays. The hand-carved bone grip is attached to the gilt, Mameluke-style handle by gilt rosettes on a column-shaped cross guard; half leather and gilt brass scabbard with etched floral design and raised motif, maker's name near mouth of the scabbard. Some pitting near blade's point, otherwise a very fine and handsome example.
