California Aeronautic Company (California) 1876. San Francisco. 100 shares. Issued, not cancelled. No.11. A fantastic heavier-than-air ship flying over San Francisco. While you can be sure that this stock paid no dividends to investors, the fact that such a company could be launched illustrates that in 1876 the idea of powered flight was becoming believable enough to get speculative ventures like this one off the ground. A scarce and attractive piece of early aircraft scripophily. The artwork was by Grafton Tyler Brown, a well-known African-American artist. VF.
