Dow, Neal (1804-1897). Prohibitionist mayor of Portland, Maine known as "Father of Prohibition", "Napoleon of Temperance". Sponsor of the "Maine Law of 1851" prohibiting manufacture & sale of liquor. Brigadier General captured and exchanged for the son of Robert E. Lee. Trio: 1) ALS. 8vo. Nov. 16, 1853. Portland. To "Friend Jackson." "…At Lowell Sunday, rained terribly - apprehended a dead failure - but the immense hall was crowded to its utmost ½ hour before the time & many went away - between 4000 and 5000 present!
