Zola, Emile (1840-1902). French novelist, playwright and journalist who helped exonerate Alfred Dreyfus when his article "J'Accuse...!" charged the French government with anti-Semitism for railroading Jewish soldier Captain Alfred Dreyfus on false charges of espionage. Convicted of libel, he escaped to England. Autographed letter signed "Emile Zola, in French, 1 page, 8vo,. Paris, April 16, 1882. To 23 Rue de Boulogne. He asks an unnamed man to "...bring to my place, Tuesday or Wednesday, from 10 to 11 o'clock, the note signed by my mother , in order that I may pay it..." Ink spot, left, mounting traces on the verso, otherwise in very good condition. At the time of this letter, Zola had begun work on his "Three Towns" trilogy of novels, beginning with Lourdes.
