Thackeray, William Makepeace (1811-1863). English novelist. Author of "Vanity Fair". ALS, 8to. 36 Crislow Square, S. W. September 27. To Lady Elizabeth. No year. "No.5. 1860" is lightly written in pencil near the upper left corner; a faint paper clip impression is visible in the same location. "Anna has written to tell you how we have been abroad and only returned on Tuesday night. When first we heard of your affliction. You have treated me and mine with such kindness and friendliness always, that you may be sure we feel sympathy at anything that causes you pleasure or grief; and at this sad time as at all others I am sure that you will believe that I am most sincerely yours, W. M. Thackeray." Included in this lot is a Caldesi Blanford & Co. carte-de-visite, Thackeray standing near a column. Also included is a wash drawing of children singing, and a woman playing a piano on New Year's Eve, with the initials "W. M. T." in the lower right corner in pencil.
