Stevenson, Robert Louis Balfour (1850-1894). Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, and travel writer. Personal check for four pounds, two shillings drawn on the Bournemouth branch of the Wilts & Dorset Banking Company Limited. 3¼" x 8¼", February 15, 1887. Pen cancelled across Stevenson's signature, which remains perfectly legible. There are two small spindle holes, a few folds, and a light mounting stain on the verso, otherwise quite fine. Issued to Willis and Trantum, merchants located in Bournemouth & Westbourne. Stevenson's first very popular book was "Treasure Island" (1883). Among his other significant achievements were A Children?s Garden of Verses, children?s poems first published as Penny Whistles (1883); "Kidnapped" (1886), also a serial; "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1886); "Underwoods" (1887), another collection of poems; and "The Black Arrow"; "A Tale of the Two Roses" (1888).
