Addison, Joseph (1672-1719). English essayist, poet and statesman. Addison was one of the great masters of English prose. ALS (initials), one page, docketed integral leaf, small 4to, n. p., July 21, 1711. To "Dear Sir. The letter reads, in part: "Being very well pleased with this day's Spectator I can not forbear sending you one of them and desiring your opinion of the story in it. When you have a son I shall be glad to be his Leontine as my circumstances will probably be like His. I have within this 12 month (sic) lost a place ... an Estate. In the Indies ... and what is more ... my mistress …I find they are going to take away my Irish place from me too: to which I must add that I have just resigned my Fellowship .. .If you have any Hints or Subjects pray send me up a paper-full..." Also mentions Sir Richard Steele, who along with Addison co-produced Spectator, a non-political newspaper. On the integral leaf, the recipient has docketed: "Mr. Addison 21 July thinks of passing a month with me. NB." There is some minor soiling, but the text is dark and clearly legible. Included is a typewritten transcription.
