Maritime Canal Company of Nicaragua, $100 shares, 18[97], #673, eagle at top, black, good very fine and scarce.

The company was chartered by the United States government in 1889 to acquire the concession assigned to the Nicaragua Canal Association in 1887. The capital was 100 million dollars. Work on the canal started in 1889 and continued until 1893 when the company went into bankruptcy due to the collapse of the Panama Canal Company and Barings bank. This piece was transferred by the shareholder in 1914 so there must have been some expectation of a return of funds, no matter how small!
