Illinois Senator for a number of terms, second Commander-in-Chief of GAR, one of the most important figures in the recognition of Memorial Day as an official holiday, unsuccessful candidate for vice-president in 1884. One page, on United States Senate Chamber lined letterhead, small format, Washington, March 13, 1876. Logan writes concerning his recommendation of Michael Schaeffer of Salem, Illinois for the judiciary. Vertical fold, Fine+.
