Bahri Mamluk. Aybak (AH 648-655/1250-1257 AD. Gold Dinar, al-Qahira d.o.f. (AH 649-651). 4.06 gms. In the name of the Ayyubid al-Ashraf Musa II (AH 648-652). Four-line central legend each side, three pellets below on reverse. Cf. Balog 3-4, A-831. Rare. Ayyubid rule in Egypt effectively came to an end in 1250 AD when the Mamluks murdered al-Mu`azzam Turanshah. al-Salih Ayyub's widow Shajar al-Durr ruled briefly as sultana followed by al-Ashraf Musa, who at six years of age became what would be the last Ayyubid sultan of Egypt. All of his coins were struck by the Mamluk Aybak who used al-Ashraf as a puppet king to legitimize his reign. When al-Ashraf was no longer needed In AH 652/1254 AD, he was deposed and sent off to live with his aunt, while Aybak began to rule in his own name. Weakness in peripheries, otherwise Very Fine.
