Philadelphia & Lancaster Turnpike Road (PA). One share, March 16, 1795, No. 919, issued to Philomon Dickinson. A lawyer and politician from Trenton, NJ, Dickinson served as brigadier general of the New Jersey militia during the Revolutionary War and was one of the most effective militia commanders of the war; he later served as U.S. Senator from NJ. Signed by William Bingham as president. Philadelphia statesman and land surveyor (the city of Binghamton, NY is named in his honor), Bingham served as a delegate from Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress, later as president pro tempore of the Senate, and U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. At the top of the certificate, within a wreathed oval cartouche, a Conestoga wagon approaches a toll gate. This is the first use of an engraved vignette on an American share certificate. Embossed seal at left, neat tri-fold; pleasing Very Fine. Framed, 15 ¾ x 19 7/8".
