Brazil/West Indies. 6,400 Reis, 1771 R. West Indies lightweight imitation. 10.91 gms. Laureate and draped José I bust r., rev. Crowned Arms. The devices close to the rims as the model for the dies was likely a clipped coin. Cf.Fr.65, KM 172.2. In the latter half of the 18th Century, the Brazilian 6,400 Reis, known as a Peca, Joe or Half Joe, was the most widely used gold coin for commercial transactions in North America and the Caribbean. Its importance in trade not surprisingly led to these lightweight contemporary imitations. Extremely Fine.
