Edison, Thomas Alva. (1847-1931). Engraved steel portrait plate. 3.5 x 4 inches, and a Proof on card. American Bank Note Company, Philadelphia. "INDEX COPY" rubber stamped in the margin. Engraved identification number "SPECIAL V-44966" (P-5896 crossed out). Excellent condition. This lovely portrait of Edison, engraved in 1899 by Charles Schlecht, appeared on the stock certificates of the Edison Portland Cement Company. Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb, phonographs, motion picture cameras, stock tickers, and devices for recording and playing sound and was perhaps the most recognizable personality of his day.
