Sarawak: Brooke, Charles Vyner, Rajah (1874-1963). Third and last "White Rajah" of Sarawak. Ruling from 1917 to 1946, Vyner maintained the popular Brooke rule which kept Sarawak's social institutions and culture intact (save headhunting which was aggressively suppressed and outlawed); thanks to an economic boost from a boom in Sarawak's rubber and oil industries, he was able to modernize the state. After World War II, Vyner abdicated and ceded Sarawak to Great Britain as a Crown Colony, a move that saw strong opposition locally. Autograph Document Signed "C.V. Brooke". One page on letterhead of the Pathological Department of Sarawak's Medical Offices, 7 7/8 x 10 1/8", Kuching, 5th November 1929. Typewritten letter by Pathologist Elizabeth Le Sueur to the Principal Medical Officer asking for a deferment of her leave to coincide with her husband's. Rajah C.V. Brooke signs "Approved / C.V. Brooke / Rajah" at lower left. Fine.
