The company purchased the Kingston to Spanish Town Railway from the Jamaican Governemmnt in 1888 when the expansion of the sugar and plantation industries called for extensions to the line that the Governemnt could not afford. The extensions were built by this American syndicate and operated with limited success until it was forced into receivership in 1898 as it could not meet payment on its mortgage bonds. The Jamaican Government took over the line again in 1900.
