Calera has long been known for it's lime production (calera is the spanish word for limestone), which remained it's primary industry. In the 1870's the town attempted to establish a colony of immigrants but was unsuccessful. A second and more successful attempt to develop the area was made in the 1880's by a group of businessmen from Montgomery who bought large areas of land and formed the Calera Land Company
