Bessemer city was created by industrialist Henry Fairchild DeBardeleben, who bought around 4000 acres of land and in 1886 built a number of furnaces to take advantage of the strong iron and steel resources in the area. Many companies then started to look to Bessemer for relocation and DeBardeleben founded the Bessemer Land and Improvement Company to survey land and plan streets, parks and sell lots to the growing population.
