Founded by Hamilton Disston to dredge and reclaim the millions of acres of land that he owned around Lake Okeechobee. He operated many dredges and arranged for experience farmers to come in and settle the area. The company failed after the panic of 1893 although many of the debts were paid with help from J.P.Morgan. Disston shot himself in the head in 1896. (See also Disston land Co.).
