Roman Republic. Q. Servilius Caepio Brutus (M. Junius Brutus). AR Denarius, 54 BC. 3.55 gms. Libertas bust r., rev. The Consul L. Junius Brutus walking l. between two lictors, each with an ax on his shoulders, preceded by an accensus; BRVTVS in ex. Craw.433/1, Syd.906a, Junia 31a. The most infamous of Caesar's assassins, M. Junius Brutus lost his father while he was a young boy. After being adopted by his uncle, Q. Servilius Caepio, he changed his name. His issues while moneyer, with their blatant themes of patriotic devotion to the Republic, and reference to Brutus' illustrious ancestry, augured well his fateful collision with Caesar. Pale lavender-gray toning over thin ancient test mark X in obverse field and lightly punched bankers mark on ear. Pleasing reverse details. Near Extremely Fine.
