France. Napoleon as first Consul (1799-1804). Peace of Amiens, 1802. Silver, 40mm. By Jean-Pierre Droz. Head of First Consul Napoleon l., signed DROZ F. on truncation, rev. The messenger of the gods Astrée alights on a newly peaceable globe, holding a caduceus, olive branch and scales. Edge: PAIX GENERALE A AMIENS AN DIX MDCCCII (caduceus). Bramsen 199, Trésor Tf.89.10, Slg. Jul. 1057. Because of its coin relief and single strike, this medal has been cataloged in the past as a pattern coin. The obverse, in fact, was used for a 5 Francs pattern (cf.Gadoury 567). A medal of this type with the same edge legend in AU-Unc. realized $2,587 in an April 2007 Stack's sale. Light friction marks in obverse field and few small digs on neck. Lovely old toning. Extremely Fine.
