France. French Revolution. Tribute to General Auguste Marie Henri Picot, Marquis de Dampierre, died 1793 (struck ca. 1821). Silver, 41mm. By Raymond Gayrard. Head r. of the aristocratic-born Revolutionary general, GAYRARD F. below, rev. Battles: VALMY / JEMMAPES / LIEGE / BOIS DE VICOIGNE, vital dates below within wreath. Scion of a military family and an admirer of Friedrich II of Prussia, Dampierre rose in the Revolutionary ranks to commander of the Army of the North and the Armée des Ardennes. Struck in the thigh by a cannonball at the end of the Battle of Raismes, he bled to death on the field. His name is inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe. Quite scarce in Silver. Attractive lavender-gray with soft cobalt-blue and vermillion iridescent hues. Choice Extremely Fine.
