Fortress while besieged by Russian forces. The Polish garrison of 4,000 under the command of General Maurycy Hauke held out against a force of some 17,000 Russians under General Rath for 8 months, capitulating on Nov. 19, 1813 - a month after Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Leipzig.
