Kingdom of Syria, Seleukos I Nikator (312-281 BC), AR Tetradrachm, Seleukeia-on-the-Tigris, ca. 296/5-281 BC, 16.80gms, laureate head of Zeus right, rev. BAIE EEYKoY, Athena hurling a spear while riding in a quadriga of elephants walking right, N above elephants´ heads (Newell ESM 41), lightly toned over some obverse pinscratches, very fine. Produced in the East, these Tetradrachms were influenced both by the 500 war elephants that Seleukos I received as part of a settlement with the Indian king Chandragupta in the Peace Accord of 303 BC, and by contemporary Ptolemaic Gold Staters which depicted a deified Alexander the Great riding in a quadriga of elephants.
