Panama-California Exposition (CA), $10 shs, San Diego, 1915, #3765, angel with wreath with ships at her feet, ships steaming in background toward cliff with tower, red with gold foil seal, three holes from previous mounting, not touching vignette, which alone reduce grade to about VF. San Diego staged this exposition in 1915 to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. San Diego was the first American port of call north of the Panama Canal on the Pacific coast. This exposition called attention to the city and bolstered an economy still shaky from the Wall Street panic of 1907. In 1910 San Diego had a population of only 39,578, which was the smallest of any city ever to attempt to hold an international exposition.
