New-York Society Library (NY),Partly printed Receipt, May 6, 1795, to James C Roosevelt, who has paid his annual subscription (10 shillings) and fines (2 pence), irregular edges, VF. James Roosevelt (1760-1847) was a prominent New York businessman who helped run the library, the oldest subscription library in the city; his grandson Theodore would make an even bigger name for himself.
