American Merchants Union Express Co (NY), $100 shs, 1868, #702, signed by William G Fargo as president, horse-drawn express cart with cargo, train and ship, "safety & dispatch" banner with dog and key, shaking hands, black, punch cancel at left, light stamp cancels at signatures, revenue stamp at top right and on verso, some marginal stains, minor edge wear, but bright and about VF+. This company was formed in 1868 when William S Fargo (1818-81) and his partners merged American Express with its competitor, Merchants Union Express.
