Standard Oil Trust (NY), $100 shares, 1883, #669, signed by John D Rockefeller as president, HM Flagler as secretary, and and JA Bostwick as treasurer, US Capitol, green, stub neatly reattached, handsomely matted in green with portrait and facsimile signatures of Rockefeller and Flagler, along with explanatory plaques, signatures lightly machine canceled, good VF+. John D Rockefeller (1839-1937) and Henry M Flagler (1830-1913) entered the oil business in the 1860s as refiners; able to dictate price terms to railroads, they forced competitors to ship at a much higher cost; when that drove their rivals to the brink of bankruptcy, Standard Oil bought them out, expanding its monopoly and making Rockefeller the richest man in the world.
