Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (NY/Mexico), $500 7% US first mortgage bond, secured by "about three hundred and seventy eight square miles of land in the State of Vera Cruz...together with two palaces," 1866, #838, signed by AL de Sta Anna, vignette of estate in Vera Cruz, each of the palaces at left with a portrait of Santa Anna, black with green underprint, red wax seal with Santa Anna´s monogram, and green embossed notary seal, encapsulated (easily removed), uneven toning from prior display, edge wear and staining, good VF. Mexican general and politician Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (1794-1876) had been the country´s president eleven times, most of them acting as its military dictator; his defeat at the Battle of San Jacinto led to Texan independence; later led Mexican forces in their doomed war against the United States; at the time of this bond, he was living in exile on Staten Island, and was trying to raise funds and troops for an assault on Mexican Emperor Maximilian; the plan never got off the ground.
