Fashion Company [Vogue Magazine], (WV), $100 shs, capital stock, 1895, #216, signed by Arthur B Turnure as president and HW McVickar as treasurer and issued to Fannie McVickar, vinette (designed by McVickar) of a beautiful woman, hat at top, fashionable canes, black and yellow, fold wear, about VF+. The Fashion Company was founded by Arthur Turnure to publish his magazine, Vogue, which started publication in 1892. HW McVickar, in addition to being company treasurer, was the magazine´s art director. Originally a weekly that focused on fashion and society news for both men and women, it soon became known chiefly as a woman´s fashion magazine, even incorporating dress patterns. After Turnure´s death in 1906, it was acquired by Conde Nast, who changed it to a biweekly and expanded its publication internationally. Nast oversaw the magazine´s growth into the premiere arbiter of American fashion (and similar roles for its French, Italian, and British versions). Guided by editors as diverse as Frank Crowninshield, Diane Vreeland, and Anna Wintour, Vogue has thrived over the past century by embodying the best in high fashion while adapting itself to changing times. The Fashion Company stock certificates are exceedingly rare; this is one of only two known to exist.
