Lee de Forest (1873-1961) is widely recognized as a father of the electronic era, for his crucial role in the development of the vacuum tube, which made long-range radio, telephone, and radar practicable. His other great innovation was in the creation of sound motion pictures, where he devised a method of coding the sound on the film itself, allowing for perfect synchronization; he founded De Forest Photofilm to make and market his invention.
