Grenville M Dodge (1831-1916) had been a US officer in the Civil War and Indian Wars; his actions helped ensure the success of the Atlanta Campaign; as chief engineer of the Union Pacific, was instrumental in building the transcontinental railroad, representing the UP at the "Golden Spike" ceremony celebrating the completion of the road.
