Victoria I Queen of the United Kingdom and Empress of India (1819-1901, ruled from 1837); presided over the zenith of the British Empire. Partly engraved Document Signed "Victoria R" as Queen, 1 page, oblong folio, Court at St James´s (London), September 15, 1857. Whe names "George Longman, Gentleman...Veterinary Surgeon in our Royal Regiment of Artillery..." Wax and paper Royal Seal, paper and metal revenue stamp. Fold wear, light toning and foxing, VG. Europe was approaching the fateful year of 1848, when republican revolts spread across the continent. Though there was some worry at Buckingham Palace, similar movements had little popularity in relatively liberal England. A veterinary surgeon was an important part of any artillery regiment, which relied on horses to transport heavy guns.
