[Napoleon I]: Josephine de Beauharnais Empress consort of Napoleon I (1763-1814, ruled from 1804); known for her intelligence and strong will; encouraged the Emperor to divorce her when she could not produce an heir; through her daughter, who married Napoleon´s brother, grandmother of Napoleon III. Interesting incomplete Manuscript Letter Signed "Josephine" as Empress, in French, 1 page, narrow oblong 8vo, Paris, November 26, 1807. She makes a recommendation for a military officer from "Wissembourg, in the Department of the Bas-Rhin" who would like a position in the twentieth regiment or battalion (the word has been overwritten in the original). Toned, mounting trace on verso, VG. The friendly tone makes it likely this was addressed to her husband. Earlier in 1807, Napoleon had secured an alliance with Russia and defeated Prussia, creating buffer states out of the western German principalities. With portrait.
